Hello Y’all
Artwork:
When writing the blog post this week, I discovered there are not many photos of my recent work. I also realized over the last couple of months I haven’t completed many artworks. This summer has been a season of experimentation and exploration. I’ve been using a new medium, and exploring different subjects. Sculpture has also entered my practice. Although, I don’t have much to show for it, there are 50 or so thumbnail sketches on my iPad, a couple of sketchbooks with test pieces, and half completed sculptures and paintings littering my studio. So, in reality I have done a lot of work. The behind the scenes work is an important part of being an artist. The learning, growing, and practicing are invigorating, and I want to do more. My currant art will be completed, however, it may not be finished until autumn.
Books:
Having a child in high school means reading books I thought I’d never read again. Since I’m the teacher and assigning the work, there is no one else to blame. Kind of exciting and daunting. I just finished listening to Beowulf. It was different listening to the audio book, but I enjoyed it. The similarities between Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and Beowulf is profound. I knew that he gleaned from Beowulf for his trilogy, but I was surprised. There truly is nothing new under the sun.
Words:
While reading Beowulf, the language made me realize how little we value the eloquence of speech. The dialogue was long and drawn out. If people spoke like that today, no one would stand around to listen. However, it did make me ponder if we took the time to care about speaking more than just the basic form of communication that it is, would we be better off as a society? How would it impact how we live our daily lives if we thought of speech as an art form?
